Even if you have great content and great products, if no one will be able to find you then you’re just wasting your time. In this article, we’re going to discuss SEO and how it can be the greatest tool for your business to be found online.

First, we need to understand what SEO is and how it works.

What is SEO

SEO or Search Engine Optimization is the process of improving your site so that it can be found organically. It’s optimizing your online content so that a search engine like Google will likely show it as a top result for searches of a certain keyword

If you want to buy something and you go to Google to search for it, those top results that show up didn’t just land there by chance. They're either running paid ads or they’ve added some SEO technique to land there organically.

Now, If you want your store to have more traffic from Google, you need to do keyword research first to understand what people are actually searching for.

What are Keywords

Keywords are the words and phrases that people type into search engines to find what they're looking for. They’re also known as search queries or “SEO keywords.”

What is Keyword research

Keyword research is the process of finding keywords that you want to rank for in search engines. It’s about understanding what potential customers are searching for and how.

It also involves analyzing and comparing keywords to find the best opportunities. You need to know this to avoid creating content about topics that nobody is searching for.

How to Find your Keywords

There are a couple of ways to find keywords and these are the tools that you can use:

It is packed with a lot of features that are very crucial for an effective SEO. Things like what keywords your site rank for, what position you rank in for those keywords, how often people are clicking your result after typing in specific queries, and what other sites have linked to your content.

The search console tools and reports will also help you measure your site's search traffic and performance, fix issues, and make your site shine in Google Search results.

Other Places to Find Keywords

This is a free SEO tool that specializes in generating new keyword ideas. It also covers pretty much every area of SEO analysis and research.

Ahrefs

Ahrefs is an SEO software suite that contains tools for link building, keyword research, competitor analysis, rank tracking, and site audits. It can also be used to conduct keyword research for Google, YouTube, and Amazon.

Keywords everywhere

This is a chrome extension and firefox add-on that helps you with keyword research. You install it and it will show you monthly search volume, CPC, and competition data of keywords on multiple websites.

Note that when adding keywords, make them readable and use natural phrases and sentences. Customers won't click links that use keywords in a random way and Google search might also ignore websites that don't use readable phrases.

Where to use these Keywords

Now after you have the keywords, you should also know where to properly place or use them. Basically, you're going to use them all over your site but there are some specific areas that Google is looking for when they're crawling your site.

Overall Site title and Meta description

This is the most basic. So you’re going to include your keywords to your overall site title because titles are the first ones to show in the searches. It will let readers know what information will be present when they click your content.

Meta descriptions are those phrases that can be seen below the titles. It is a summary of the contents of that page. A good description encourages more people to click the link to your store.

You will have a maximum of 70 characters for your homepage and up to 320 characters for your meta description. But don’t use all those available characters. Just make it short in a conversational and natural way.

Image name & Alt text

Image name is used to provide a title for your image. Search engines not only crawl the text on your webpage but they also crawl your image file names.
Alt text, on the other hand, is a text that appears inside the image container when the image can not be displayed. It helps search engines understand what an image is about.

It's important to use relevant keywords in naming your images because it helps your web page rank on search engines.

Search Engine Listing Preview Description

This is an area on Shopify where you can edit your page title, description, and the URL and handle. You will be able to see the preview of what will be shown to your visitors. So you want to make sure that it is enticing enough for them to click on that product and then go to your store.

If for some reason you change your page titles, you also have to scroll to the bottom and change your URL handle because it's going to maintain the old information.

Other Tips

  1. Use H1, H2, and H3 tags. H1 is for the main heading and H2 and H3 are used for subheadings. What's good about Shopify is when you put your product title in there, it's automatically going in as an H1 tag.
  2. Don't keyword stuff. Make sure your text is readable and it makes sense.
  3. Submit your sitemap to Google to have them crawl your site immediately. It will help Google find and index valuable pages on your site.
  4. Use Shopify apps for SEO. Shopify has a lot of apps that can do the SEO for you automatically.
  5. Make sure your store does not have broken links. Shopify has apps for this that will send you a report on your broken links and then you can go in and fix those.

Final note

SEO is a very powerful tool for small businesses. If you can use and utilize the right SEO techniques, you will have a fighting chance to compete with bigger businesses and those who can pay ads to show them in the search results.

Don’t get intimidated for those paid ads on the top searches. A lot of people prefer to choose those organic searches because they know Google did it work to show the most trusted source of what they need.
